This one day advanced workshop is designed for individuals who have completed introductory training in Motivational Interviewing (MI), and have experience using MI in an applied setting. Participants will be offered the opportunity to further develop skillful use of MI in an interactive workshop using case examples and guided practice. Of particular focus will be developing skills for evoking change talk, eliciting and strengthening commitment to change, and recognising and managing client resistance. This workshop is appropriate for psychologists who are in the role of counselling clients to make and sustain healthy behaviour changes. The workshop will cover the following learning objectives: Review the MI framework and core skills in relation to participants' own examples of using MI in practice: What worked? What didn't work? Introduce the eight tasks of learning MI Provide opportunity to reinforce skills through observation and practice Provide additional tools for reviewing progress in transferring learning to practice in the workplace. About the Presenter: Helen Mentha BA (Hons), M.Psych (Clinical), MAPS, Member of the College of Clinical Psychologists Helen Mentha is a clinical psychologist with over 13 years experience in the community and private sectors, and has specialised in working with substance misuse in community and forensic settings, dual diagnosis and the application of Motivational Interviewing to positive behaviour change. She is committed to the delivery of compassionate, evidence-based practice in working with substance misuse. In 2007 she was participated in a "train-the-trainer" workshop, conducted by Professor Bill Miller and Dr Terri Moyers in Chicago USA. She has also completed further specialist training in Motivational Interviewing, including applications in supervision and criminal justice settings. Helen is an experienced and dynamic trainer, and has delivered practice-based workshops to professionals from a diverse range of fields, including alcohol and other drug treatment, mental health, corrections, schools, aged care, community services, private practice and corporate settings. |
