Motivational Interviewing: Beyond the basics (2 days)

Format Workshop
Presenters Helen Mentha
Description Beyond the Basics is a practice-based workshop to deepen and extend learning from the Foundation Skills course.

With minimal lecture-based learning, this workshop provides participants to practice core skills in a positive learning environment with coached feedback. While there is a core structure, the content of the two days is flexible to best meet the needs of the group.

Participants are encouraged to discuss experiences of applying MI in their work and challenges in using the approach in a safe learning environment, while continuing to develop confidence in using different elements of the model.

The workshop extends the foundation skills training, including use of summarising to consolidate and focus conversations about change, deepening reflections, exploring the role of values and working with commitment.

Learning objectives of the workshop include:

Refreshing and deepening individual understanding of
the MI framework
Discuss experiences of using MI & the challenges in
guiding conversations about possible change.
Learn from observation and small group practice
Deepen understanding of the use of purpose and
direction within a client-centred approach
Practice core component skills, such as developing
useful complex reflections
Practice identifying core personal values and their
relevance to the change process
 Practice guiding the change conversation.

The training is highly interactive, with a focus on practical skill development. The two-day Beyond the Basics workshop covers the following topics:

Day one: Refresh, Deepen, Extend
 Refresh the model

Day two: Putting it all together
