| Description | Beyond the Basics is a practice-based workshop to deepen and extend learning from the Foundation Skills course. With minimal lecture-based learning, this workshop provides participants to practice core skills in a positive learning environment with coached feedback. While there is a core structure, the content of the two days is flexible to best meet the needs of the group. Participants are encouraged to discuss experiences of applying MI in their work and challenges in using the approach in a safe learning environment, while continuing to develop confidence in using different elements of the model. The workshop extends the foundation skills training, including use of summarising to consolidate and focus conversations about change, deepening reflections, exploring the role of values and working with commitment. Learning objectives of the workshop include: Refreshing and deepening individual understanding of the MI framework Discuss experiences of using MI & the challenges in guiding conversations about possible change. Learn from observation and small group practice Deepen understanding of the use of purpose and direction within a client-centred approach Practice core component skills, such as developing useful complex reflections Practice identifying core personal values and their relevance to the change process Practice guiding the change conversation. Methodology The training is highly interactive, with a focus on practical skill development. The two-day Beyond the Basics workshop covers the following topics: Day one: Refresh, Deepen, Extend Refresh the model Deepen core skills Day two: Putting it all together Working with values Identifying, eliciting and reinforcing change talk and commitment talk Transferring skills to practice |

| Notes | Presenter: Helen Mentha a clinical psychologist with over 14 years' experience in the community and private sectors, and has specialised in working with substance misuse in community and forensic settings, dual diagnosis and the application of Motivational Interviewing to positive behaviour change. She currently runs Mentha Consulting, providing training, supervision and psychological services. In 2007 she was participated in a "train-the-trainer" workshop, conducted by Professor Bill Miller and Dr Terri Moyers in Chicago USA. She has also completed further specialist training in Motivational Interviewing, including applications in supervision, coding MI sessions, working with change talk and integrating MI within criminal justice settings. Helen is an experienced and dynamic trainer, and has delivered practice-based workshops to professionals from a diverse range of fields, including alcohol and other drug treatment, mental health, corrections, schools and aged care. |
