The Assessment of Risk for Sexual Offending: The SVR-20 and RSVP

Description This workshop will provide participants with an overview of the current research and clinical practice advances in the field of sexual offending risk assessments. The workshop is appropriate for those wishing to obtain an overview of sexual offence risk assessment and to those wishing to update their knowledge in the area. A framework will be provided for assessing sexual offender's risk of re-offending. Topics to be covered will include base-rate information about sexual re-offence rates and the identification of risk factors for sexual re-offending. Participants will provided with formal training in the administration, item descriptions, and interpretation of the Sexual Violence Risk -20 (SVR-20) and the Risk for Sexual Violence Protocol). Mention will be made of additional developments in sexual offence risk assessment. The role of actuarial risk measures and psychopathy in sexual re-offending risk assessments will also be highlighted. Limitations and challenges pertaining to the assessment of risk for sexual offending will be noted throughout.
About the presenter(s) James Ogloff is Foundation Professor of Clinical Forensic Psychology at Monash University and Director of Psychological Services for Forensicare. Since 1984, his work has included the assessment and treatment of offenders, sexual offenders. He has served as an expert in the risk of re-offending among sexual offenders in Victoria, Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. He has given addresses or workshops in risk assessment throughout Australia, North America, New Zealand, the USA, the UK, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He is a past-chair or past-president of professional psychology and forensic psychology associations in North America and Australia/New Zealand. Professor Ogloff has published 16 books or monographs and more than 220 scholarly articles and book chapters. He is the 2009 recipient of the APS Award for Distinguished Contributions to Forensic Psychology and the 2012 recipient of the Canadian Psychological Association Donald Andrews Career Contributions Award for Criminal Justice Psychology.
