Course overview:

This two day workshop provides a practical introduction to child-led art and play therapy. According to Violet Oaklander, a renowned leader in Play Therapy, toys are children's words and play is their language. To understand and help children, we need to allow children to express themselves in their language and learn to read the metaphors of play. Based on the work of international play therapy centres, and the presenter's own twenty years of clinical experience, case illustrations counselling children are explored. Consideration is given to the types of art and play media relevant for different ages and issues being addressed. Through training in expressive play methods using toys, puppets and art media, you will gain the necessary skills and an understanding about working therapeutically in non-directive play therapy with children. This introductory workshop provides practical, useful and interactive opportunities to start your work with children aged between 2-10. Relevant development principles and the current evidence base for this methodology will also be reviewed.

Participants will have the opportunity to:

Identify the theoretical basis of working with art and play media
Consider the evidence base for these ways of working with children (ages 2-10)
Review common issues for which children are referred for counselling
Build skills in communicating and contracting with parents
Practise person-centred empathic counselling skills
Learn child-led art and play therapy techniques
Consider practical ways to start to build art and play media resources in your own practice

What do I do when the play is over?
How do I make sense of what the play means?
Do I play with the child?
What do I tell parents about what has happened in a session?
What if the child doesn't want to play?
How do we know if this is working?
When might play therapy not be useful to a child?
What if the child wants to take toys home?
What toys/ resources do you need for play therapy?


Is play therapy evidence-based?

The current evidence for play therapy will be presented and reviewed in this workshop. References and journal articles will also be provided.

Do I need to be creative?

No artistic experience or skill is required for this workshop.


How many people can attend?

To maximise the opportunities for active, experiential, skills-based learning, this workshop is limited to 16 participants. Minimum participants are 6 per workshop.

This is by far the most useful workshop I have ever attended. Very good balance of ideas/ practical suggestions and theoretical underpinnings.

This course is excellent. Everything has been prepared so professionally and I have learnt a lot of different tools I can use.

The most valuable thing about this course was being reminded that talking therapy and taking the lead isn't always beneficial for the client and knowing that there's more to counselling than CBT!

I have been to quite a few workshops in recent times and yours was a class above the rest. Unfortunately I have been to plenty of places where an uninspiring presenter puts people to sleep by reading all day from overcrowded powerpoint slides. In contrast your presentation was a brilliant mix of passive and active learning, with lots of interaction.
About the presenter(s) About the Facilitator: Jacki Short is the Principal Psychologist at the Sydney Centre for Creative Change. With over twenty years experience working around Australia and internationally, Jacki offers counselling, supervision, workshops and training. In addition to her extensive experience in counselling children, young people and adults, she is an experienced and Masters qualified adult educator. She is also an APS Member of the College of Counselling Psychologists. Jacki remains committed to the safe and expressive growth of all those with whom she works.
