Working with Young Offenders

Format Seminar/Presentation
Presenters Louisa Hackett
Description This seminar will follow the hypothetical journey of a young person through the youth justice system in South Australia, drawing from multiple real life case examples. Along the way, this journey will be used to illustrate the processes of psychological assessment and intervention that are both similar to and different from approaches that we might take with adult offenders. The seminar will include a summary of contemporary empirical and practice literature that relates to working with young offenders, and discussion of key considerations for psychologists and other professionals who work with young offenders.
About the presenter(s) Louisa Hackett is a Forensic Psychologist who first developed an interest in the field of Youth Justice in 2004, while completing her masters thesis and working as a research assistant in the area. After registering as a psychologist in 2005, Louisa has worked primarily in the adult system, with the Department for Correctional Services at Yatala, Mobilong & Adelaide Women's Prison, and within Forensic Mental Health Services here in SA. Louisa spent several years as a researcher with the Forensic Psychology Research Group at UniSA, where she was involved in several local, national and international consultancy projects. Louisa also spent a year in Vancouver, Canada, working with predominantly homeless clients with concurrent mental health & substance use disorders. Louisa returned to South Australia in 2011, and after spending a few months in private practice, is now enjoying her role as Principal Psychologist with DCSI: Youth Justice.
