Working with Separating Parents and Children
|Presenters||Dr Phil Watts|
|Description||One of the most common reasons for a referral to a psychologist is the separation of a long term relationship. Clients bring with them a multitude of issues and concerns ranging from depression and adjustment disorder, to seeking advice about what is best for their children. This workshop is designed for clinicians who want to have a working understanding of the separation and divorce process and its impact on adults and children.
Separation is also an area with legal pitfalls for the unwary, so this session is not only about working clinically but being aware of the potential legal issues. Therefore the session will include an overview of the court processes and law, and will include some hints on how to avoid court.
The topics include:
Know the journey - Separation issues for adults
Triggers - Adult attachment, pathology, and dynamics
Helping kids - How children cope with separation and parental conflict
Dividing lives - Shared care and what's best for children
When things turn nasty - overview of sexual abuse, DV, and alienation allegations
Legal mine-field - Family court and legal issues
Avoiding Complaints - Working ethically and sensibly
This workshop requires no previous training in separation and divorce issues. You are expected to have general clinical skills and common sense.
While Dr Phil works extensively in the Family Court domain, this is not designed to be a forensic skills workshop although the dynamics of the presentation would be helpful to those who work in the legal arena.
