| Description | Do you understand enough & feel confident providing quality support or counselling to transgender & intersex clients? Increasing numbers of people are coming out as transgender & intersex. You will probably one day work with these clients & it may not be appropriate to refer them on. There is much misinformation and many myths around gender variance. This workshop is designed to make sure you have a solid understanding of this area so you can feel comfortable dealing with trans or interesex clients. Topics include: ? What is Gender Identity Disorder & what is the impact ? Connection between sexual orientation & gender ? What can cause gender dysphoria? ? Underlying psychological dynamics ? Differences with age groups ? Coming out to family & in relationships ? Unique & complex issues with mental health professionals ? Understanding transitioning ? Dealing with a transphobic/homophobic world ? Case studies integrating theory with practice |
| About the presenter(s) | Paul Martin has been specializing in gender diversity & mental health for over 25 years. He recently presented and facilitated at Australia's first Transgender & Sistergirl conference recently in Cairns. He educates health professionals, consults to organizations and is actively engaged in educating the public through media and advocates change in the area of politics which has included talking to many MP's in Canberra and meetings with Attorneys General & the Prime Minister. He is also the Political Liaison Officer for the Queensland Branch of the Australian Psychological Society and is a lecturer at Griffith University in the School of Psychology. |
