'Understanding Psychopathy: What it is, what it's not, and how to work with it'. |
|---|---|
| Format | Seminar/Presentation |
| Presenters | Dr Kirin Hilliar, BPsych (Hons) MPsych(Forensic), PhD ,MAPS |
| Description | Description: 'Psychopathy' is a concept that has accumulated a large number of myths and misconceptions about just what it is and what it means regarding responsivity to intervention. This presentation aims to give attendees a better idea of psychopathy, its common traits, its biological and psychosocial underpinnings, and how it is different from other mental disorders and personality disorders. Attendees will be given an opportunity to identify psychopathic traits in a film case study, and discuss tips on how to effectively work with clients (or colleagues!) who show psychopathic traits. Finally, it will be emphasised that psychopathy is a multifaceted concept, where each characteristic lies on a continuum and can in some circumstances be quite adaptive. Thus it is not important to try and determine whether someone is a 'psychopath' or not, but rather to understand their unique constellation of traits and clarify how best to work with them.
