Assisting People Through the Grieving Process

Description Suitable for counsellors, chaplains, youth workers and others in the helping profession, Assisting People Through the Grieving Process has been designed to assist workers to support clients who are dealing with loss issues in their lives. The focus will include therapeutic strategies and interventions and the importance of self-care strategies. It will provide participants with an opportunity to understand grief as a lifelong experience related to loss and design supportive interventions useful in assisting others with grief.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
Identify some of the typical losses faced by people at different stages of life
Recognise common grief reactions
Demonstrate empathic listening skills
Discuss ways to assist a person in grief
Recognise complicated grief reactions and understand when to refer
Understand how working with the bereaved touches us personally and the importance of self-care
Understand gender issues in bereavement
Identify secondary loss issues and adaptation strategies
Gain helping skills for the outreach worker
About the presenter(s) Cate Litjens joined the ARBOR team as Bereavement Counsellor in late 2011. Cate has worked over the past 8 years with families facing chronic and terminal illness such as cancer and chronic fatigue, and most recently with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA (also working with Motor Neuron Disease and other life limiting neurological conditions). Cate has a Bachelor of Counselling and has a gentle, client-centred approach drawing from attachment theory and emotionally focused therapy.
