|---|---|
| Format | Workshop |
| Presenters | Dr Barbara Meddin |
| Description | Do you: Work with adults you who suspect may have been abused as children? Wonder what impact that abuse had on them as a child? Are concerned as to how childhood maltreatment affects them as adults? Wonder how it impacts on their own family such as their spouse and children? Feel confused about what impact heredity versus environment plays in defining the consequences? Feel unsure of what you can do to help your adult clients who have been abused as a child or whom you suspect has been through the healing process? By the end of the workshop participants will have gained: A brief overview of what child maltreatment is Learned about the differences and typology concerning the predominant groups of children who have been abused An understanding of what impact being abused or neglected as a child has on that child as an adult A canvassing of what it 'feels like' to be an abused or neglected child and what messages does it give to a child about who they are, how they make sense of it and how it affects their self-esteem/self-concept as adults An appreciation of what role heredity, genetic makeup and the individual's environment plays in respect to their impact of maltreatment An awareness of what factors lessen the impact of childhood maltreatment and of those that compound or that makes the consequences for adult survivors worse An indication of what support, intervention and therapeutic endeavours are necessary to assist the adult survivor |
