|Description||Positive Education (Implementing an applied positive psychology & coaching framework) & informal AGM
The Interest Group of Coaching Psychology would like to expand the breadth of topics covered beyond executive coaching. To this end, we would like to end the year with exploring a Brisbane based journey of Positive Education, as an example of implementation an applied positive psychology and coaching framework.
"The schooling of children has, for more than a century, been about accomplishment, the avenue into the world of adult work. I am all for accomplishment, success, literacy, and discipline, but imagine if schools could, without compromising either, teach both the skills of well being and the skills of achievement. Imagine positive education."
- Martin Seligman, Education Today, 2012
Several years ago, Martin Seligman along with a team from Pennsylvania University, was invited by the Principal of Geelong Grammar in Victoria to launch a bold new experiment - to infuse Positive Psychology into an entire school - from the classrooms to the playing fields to the houses to the counselling centre. All staff were taught the principles of positive psychology, of resilience, and how to use the validated interventions of Positive Psychology in their own lives and the lives of their students. The aim of this venture was to make wellbeing the true measure of wealth, and to place the investment in "wealth creation" in our children and the environments that most determine their futures.
Since this experiment began, schools around the world have embraced Positive Education, and Australia is acknowledged as being at the cutting edge of this movement.
In Brisbane, John Paul College has recently established a Department of Positive Education to steer this school towards making well-being the core measure of their students' development using rigorous implementation science.
To share the JPC journey, our guest speaker for the IGCP Annual General Meeting for 2012 is Nahum Kozak, who has the honour of being the first Head of Positive Education at JPC Brisbane. Nahum will talk about how JPC is embracing the Positive Education approach and the vision of the school for their students' futures.
