Introduction to Equine Assisted Interventions

Event number: 17469
18 CPD hours
Workshop
Presenter(s): James Douglas & Mandy Shapland

This 3 day workshop aims to showcase Equine Assisted Interventions using the EAGALA method.  Working with horses and equine specialists this workshop is designed to prepare mental health practitioners and facilitators to work within a collaborative partnership to facilitate client's learning and therapeutic goals.

Participants will leave with an introductory understanding of the EAGALA method, be able to identify clients that may benefit from Equine Assisted Interventions, understand the use of metaphor in practice and develop the confidence to apply their therapeutic skills within this context.  Counsellors & psychologists working in, and students aspiring to work in the Clinical, Organisational and Community settings are all welcome.

As an Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) Therapist James will discuss how he has integrated this approach within the equine environment and with Mandy's lifetime of experience with horses participants will also be encouraged to explore their own therapeutic modalities and how these might apply within the context of Equine Assisted Interventions.

We also look forward to inviting participants into a local peer supervision network for mental health workers working with horses and link participants into further opportunities for professional development.

About the presenter(s)

James Douglas - With 20 years experience in a variety of organisational and counselling psychology roles James has a wealth of knowledge and practical experience. In the last 14 years, James has been specifically working with police and emergency service workers and caring for individuals and groups with complex trauma histories. His current practice is primarily ACT focused which he uses to assist clients with chronic pain, trauma and relationship challenges.

Mandy Shapland - As retired veterinarian with a life long passion for horses and a love of people Mandy has watched people grow in the presence of horses for 3 decades. Her curiosity peaked when she first learned that psychologists were using equine assisted interventions to help people build resilience. Over the last couple of years Mandy has cultivated her passion by developing a herd of horses suitable for Equine Assisted Interventions and learning the Equine Assisted Growth And Learning Association method.
