Secrets and Lies Inside the Family: What To Do in Therapy

Event number: 17580
6 CPD hours
Workshop
Presenter(s): Dr Maurizio Andolfi

Lying emerges from implicit family secrets and represents a manipulation of reality. Family secrets develop through Family Myths and can be transmitted at an intergenerational level in critical stages of the family life cycle, such as sudden losses of family “pillars”, family cut-off (for example in migration processes), economic failures, hostile marital separation, chronic diseases, criminal behaviour, etc. Secrets and lies bring to “overinclusion” and coalition with those who share it while it creates a process of exclusion and powerlessness for those (often children) who do not share it.

In therapy and counselling, it is important to identify some major family events, and to challenge family secrets, and to look for the disclosure of the truth. In order to do that it is fundamental to create a context of safety and trust in the therapeutic process, and the timing of it.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • Discriminate between lies and secrets inside the family
  • Understand about family myths and their intergenerational transmission
  • Understand about the construction of a secret starting from a family event/trauma
  • Be able to deal with the issue of sharing the truth in therapy
