Betrayal and Mistrust in a Couple Relationship

When a betrayal or a serious deceit occur in a couple relationship, the wounds inflicted are deep and mistrust can be the result. Is the betrayal just a sudden emotional turmoil, or is the result of long term misunderstanding and lack of authenticity in the couple relationship?

Andolfi will describe how to work step by step with the couple, starting from the mutual hurt, the impulse for vindication, and the void in the intimacy.  He will explore the possibility of forgiveness and reconciliation. The construction of therapeutic rituals for reconciliation and remarriage will be also be described.

This workshop aims to explore issues of family secrets and lies and betrayal in loving relationship and will provide the participants with a range of clinical studies and videos as well as practical methods and strategies to assist couple and children through very painful experiences in family life.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

  • View couple functioning from a three generational perspective
  • Connect with the wounds produced by a betrayal in couple life
  • Assist couple to move from mistrust and anger to the possibility of forgiveness.
  • Assist couple to pass through pain and sorrow in order to  reconciliate  in therapy

About the presenter(s)

Maurzio is a Child Psychiatrist, Master Family Therapist, and Clinical Supervisor. He is Professor of Psychology at University of Rome, the Editor-in-Chief of the Italian Family Therapy Journal, Co-Founder of the European Family Therapy Association, Past-President of the Italian Family Therapy Society and current Professor in Residence at William Street Family Therapy Centre.
