The BPIG is proud to present the Mindfulness-Based Emotional Balance (MBEB) residential retreat - an empirically-supported 8-week psycho-educational group intervention that teaches mindfulness meditation and emotion training. This is the first time this training has been offered outside the USA

Created by Stanford University CCARE Senior Teacher Margaret Cullen in 2007, MBEB adds key emotion components to the basic MBSR curriculum creating an intervention that cultivates greater emotional ease and well-being while also training in mindfulness fundamentals. 

MBEB has been shown to reduce stress, depression and anxiety, and increase mindfulness, self-compassion and personal growth in a series of randomised controlled trials with educators in Canada and the US.

This 4 or 6-day residential retreat will provide professionals the opportunity to study and experience the foundational underpinnings, mindfulness meditations and specific exercises that are the framework of the MBEB program.

Core themes/practices include:
•   Motivation, Values and Emotional Balance
•   Emotion Theory
•   Mindfulness of the Body, thoughts and feelings
•   Exploring Forgiveness
•   Working with Anger and Fear
•   Cultivating Kindness and Awakening Compassion

Participants will experience the entire 36-hour program, including a silent retreat day. 

This residential retreat is highly interactive. In the first four days of the residential retreat, the entire MBEB program will be shared. In tadditional two days the residential retreat, there will be opportunities to discuss the rationales, philosophy and pedagogy of the training itself for those interested in teaching MBEB.

This residential retreat will integrate didactic and experiential teaching modules. The curriculum includes both large and small group learning, with opportunity for role-play and simulated patient-practitioner encounters. There will be daily meditation practice yoga/mindful movement, and periods of silence. The ethical underpinnings of teaching MBEB will be discussed. 

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the 4 day MBEB Intensive program, participants will be able to:

  • Engage or deepen a personal meditation practice.
  • Explore in their own experience how to adopt a nonjudgmental and nonreactive stance towards emotions. The MBEB tools build our capacity to be aware of and identify what is occurring without reacting unconsciously from automatic emotional patterns.  
  • Use mindfulness-based strategies to cope with the everyday kind of emotional suffering and dysrgegulation whether it be emotional instability, bursts of anger, intense efforts to avoid real or perceived abandonment, or unstable interpersonal relationships.
  • Communicate emotions and needs in more skilful and healthy ways 
  • Identify their own emotional triggers and use knowledge of the refractory period to identify and recover from difficult emotions more rapidly.  
  • Use specific practices to cultivate pro-social emotions that generate personal and interpersonal wellbeing, including kindness, compassion and forgiveness.

Participant Guidelines

For those participating in the 4 day MBEB Intensive only

There are no special requisites to participate in the MBEB intensive. Previous experience with meditation practice is welcome but not required. As this is a highly experiential program, participants have must be open to to practice meditation, doing relational exercises, and exploring their emotions.

We discourage people from attending an MBEB intensive program if they are:

Under 18, Currently dealing with drug addiction or alcoholism, Suffering severe depression or facing a major life crisis. These conditions may require a more intensive support that what can be offered in a group psychoeducational intervention.

About the presenter(s)

Margaret is a Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified MBSR teacher.  She is Founding Faculty at the Compassion Institute and a Senior Teacher at Stanford's Center for Compassion. For over 20 years she has been pioneering secular contemplative programs for a wide variety of cohorts and has been facilitating support groups for cancer patients and their families.  A meditator for over 35 years, she writes frequently about mindfulness.

Gonzalo is a Clinical Psychologist who teaches mindfulness and compassion-based programs in Spain and internationally. Gonzalo was trained at Stanford University’s Center for Compassion (CCARE), and completed a Certificate in Compassion Focused Therapy at the University of Derby (UK). He has co-authored two books and several academic and dissemination articles on psychology and contemplative practices.
