Event number: 18769
Presentation/Seminar
Presenter(s): Dr Helen Kambouridis

Interested in working as a counselling psychologist in a clinical setting? Want an introduction to skills and strategies useful for working with trauma in child and adolescent victims of abuse?

The APS College of Counselling Psychologists, in conjunction with psychology student associations around Melbourne, is offering a free seminar for students and provisional psychologists about what it is like to work as a psychologist at one of Australia's most well-known hospitals, the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.

This seminar will cover a range of topics that may include:

What it can be like working as a counselling psychologist in a hospital setting.

  • How to prepare before undertaking a placement in a clinical setting.
  • Identifying indicators of trauma in children and adolescents.
  •  What to do when you become aware of indicators of possible abuse occurring against or perpetrated by a child or adolescent.
  • Things to be aware of regarding abusive behaviour in children and adolescents.
  • Things to remember about working with particularly tricky or complex presentations, including intergenerational trauma, sibling abuse and children and adolescents who do not have the capacity or willingness to verbalise their experiences.
  • Useful frameworks for working with children and adolescents who have experienced relational trauma and their families.

Please note this Seminar is intended for students and provisional psychologists, and as such, the content will not be appropriate for meeting CPD requirements for registered psychologists.

Also please note registration is not transferable and attendees will be required to present ID at the door.
