Advanced Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Part Two

Event number: 18862
14 CPD hours
Presenter(s): Graham Taylor

EMDR treatment focuses on resolving emotional distress arising from incidents such as automobile accidents, assault, natural disasters, and combat trauma. In addition to PTSD, it is also used as a treatment for disorders where earlier emotionally traumatic experiences are etiologically related to the person’s current distress. Hence it can be used as a component in the treatment of phobias, panic attacks, depression, substance abuse, complicated grief and personality disorder. EMDR works faster and is less distressing to patients compared with exposure based therapy.

This is an advanced workshop that targets clients who have co-morbid diagnosis in addition to meeting criteria for PTSD. Participants need to have completed an EMDR Australia Accredited Part One (Introductory) training AND had experience with 4 clients or 12 sessions, or thereabouts. Part one training is sufficient for clients with PTSD and mild levels of dissociation and substance abuse problems. This additional training is necessary if the severity of co-morbid issues meet the criteria of a dissociative disorder, substance use dependence, or borderline personality disorder. This workshop includes EMDR techniques such as cognitive interweaves, formulating a client according to AIP theory, and specific EMDR protocols for complex issues.

Learning outcomes for EMDR Part Two training includes:

  • Specialised assessments for clients with generalised long term problems (e.g. Personality Disorder, Complex Trauma).
  • Specialised protocols for disorders such as addiction.
  • Adapting standard EMDR for clients with dissociative defences.
  • Integrating EMDR with cognitive, behavioural and experiential therapy approaches.
  • Building and integrating client resources for those who lack them.
  • Cognitive Interweave, a more therapist-active variant of EMDR when processing becomes stuck.
  • Research update detailing all recent published papers on EMDR.
  • A detailed workshop manual, with all assessment and treatment protocols.
  • Supervised practicum
