Yoga for Trauma

Event number: 18945
1 CPD hours
Presenter(s): Charles Stevenson

The next APS Brisbane Area Branch general meeting will be on September 6 and will include a presentation

Trauma, yoga and coming home to your body explores bodywork or the 'bottom-up' approach and where it fits in as an adjunctive treatment of the whole person following trauma. The presentation begins with the way that the whole body experiences trauma, some of the objective biomarkers that are being used to measure stress and the relevance of relationships with the people around them, their habitat, their habits and present moment awareness. There is also an opportunity to experience the two main types of yoga for trauma that Charles uses anecdotally with success in his work with veterans and emergency services personnel with PTSD

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this seminar, attendees will have a broad understanding of:

  • the lived experience of trauma
  • a adjunctive use of yoga in the management of PTSD

About the presenter(s)

Before finding Yoga, Charles Stevenson spent 16 years as a full time soldier in the Australian Army. As a medic, Charles deployed to East Timor in 2004, the Victorian Bushfires in 2009, and Afghanistan in 2009 and 2012. Despite those who were close to him at the time telling him that he was a different person after returning home from Afghanistan in 2009, Charles lived in denial of his symptoms to the extent that he returned to Afghanistan in 2012 as a Platoon Sergeant. It was after his nervous breakdown a short time later and subsequent diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that his spouse Karen introduced him to the benefits of yoga. The more often he practiced yoga the more he became inspired to teach other traumatised people. Charles then completed his 350 hour and 500-hour Yoga Teacher trainings, followed by intensive training with some world leaders in the fields of yoga for trauma, neuroplasticity and fasciaplasticity. Charles is the author of 'How to heal with your tribe: PTSD, yoga & coming home to your body' and he has written for: The Journal of Military and Veterans Health, Response magazine, My Health Association and has featured in Fist Boxing Magazine Australia. Charles is now a Yoga Teacher and Yoga Therapist, and founder of Healing Energy Yoga Therapeutics where he works primarily with traumatised populations. Charles lives in Brisbane and is the proud husband to Karen and Father to their three children.
