Sleep assessment and low intensity interventions for adolescents and adults - POSTPONED as at 3 November

Event number: 19166
12 CPD hours
Presenter(s): Prof. Michael Gradisar

POSTPONED as at 3 November (re-scheduled to 16-17 March, 2018)

This workshop is designed for psychologists and mental health professionals who work with adolescents and adults presenting with a sleep problem. Information and theory related to sleep will be provided, such as stages of sleep, sleep pressure, 24-hour circadian rhythms and sleep hygiene will be introduced. The specific sleep needs and common sleep problems that present during adolescence will be discussed, as well as how sleep needs change during adolescence and adulthood. Key evidence-based interventions for use with adolescents will be provided.

In considering sleep problems in an adult population, the workshop will devote time to brief interventions, including sleep hygiene, behavioural and cognitive approaches, including covering the current evidence base for which techniques have been shown to be or not be effective. Participants will also work in groups to apply the techniques to cases provided by the workshop presenter.

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the workshop, participants should have developed knowledge of:

  • Basic sleep information
  • Fundamental physiological and psychological theories related to sleep
  • Sleep needs during adolescence
  • Common sleep problems during adolescence, including insomnia and circadian rhythm issues
  • Effective interventions for sleep problems during adolescence
  • Effective basic sleep hygiene techniques
  • Effective brief behavioural techniques for insomnia
  • Cognitive techniques for insomnia as an adjunct to usual treatment
  • How to choose and apply the most appropriate techniques to various insomnia cases

About the presenter(s)

Michael Gradisar PhD, MAPS is a Professor in the School of Psychology at Flinders University. He is Director of the Child and Adolescent Sleep Clinic, where he treats child and adolescent sleep disorders. He has published several clinical trials of treatments for sleep disorders across the lifespan, including several randomised-controlled trials of school-based sleep interventions. His teaching focuses on knowledge transference and skills training so students can be work-ready for clinical practice. He has applied this same principle to the workshops he has delivered to practitioners in Australia and internationally.
