Anger: The neglected emotion

Event number: 19188
7 CPD hours
Study Group Network
Presenter(s): Dr Monica O’Kelly FAPS

Anger is a neglected emotion and not well understood. It is not as well studied as the other emotions of depression and anxiety by researchers and many therapists have misconceptions regarding anger. Some believe that underlying anxiety is the real problem. Others consider that as long as there is no aggression that anger is all right. Yet others consider that it is healthy to get the anger out.

This workshop will explore what the research tells us about anger. Treatment issues will then be explored. They include motivational issues, denial and taking responsibility.  Practical therapeutic skills will be discussed and demonstrated with particular reference to identifying the unhelpful cognitions related to anger and cognitive restructuring. Research supporting the applicability of exposure techniques with anger will be discussed and exposure techniques demonstrated.

This workshop will require active participation with pre-reading required.  Participants might even have fun. This workshop is suitable for any clinician working with angry clients.

Learning Outcomes

- At the end of the workshop the participants will:

·         - Have knowledge of the facts about anger supported by the research.

·        - Have an understanding of the difficulties working therapeutically with anger and knowledge of how to overcome them.

·        -  Have increased their knowledge and skills regarding practical CBT interventions with anger.

This workshop is suitable for any mental health professional working with angry clients, preferably having skills in CBT.
