Interpersonal Psychotherapy: An Evidence-based therapy for depression and other clinical problems.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy is an evidence-based therapy that is equivalent or superior in effect to CBT for adult depression and demonstrated effectiveness with adolescent depression. It has been successfully applied to eating disorders and recently, PTSD. This workshop will use a combination of didactic presentations, exercises and video demonstrations to provide an overview of IPT.

Learning outcomes

Participants will:

  • Develop an understanding and skills in the assessment & conceptualisation of client problems within IPT;
  • Develop skills in the application of specific IPT techniques such as clarification, use of affect, communication analysis, and roleplay relevant to the different interpersonal problem areas
  • Develop skills in the application of IPT to a range of clinical problems and populations (e.g., depressed adults & adolescents, eating disorders, PTSD)

About the presenter(s)

Associate Professor Ross King is a clinical psychologist with 25 years’ experience in acute psychiatric, community, and private practice settings and in the training of psychology students and psychologists. As Deputy Director of the Clinical Programs at Deakin University, he has administrative responsibility for the development, accreditation and conduct of the course, reporting to the Director of Postgraduate Professional Programs. He also is the co-developer and deliverer of Deakin’s Psychology Supervisor Training. His particular clinical interests lie in the area of psychopathology and diagnosis, eating disorders and the application of CBT and IPT approaches to a broad range of disorders. He is an editor and contributor to Integrative Assessment in Clinical Psychology published by Academic Press Australia
