Schema Therapy with Adults on the Autism Spectrum

Event number: 19300
3.5 CPD hours
Presenter(s): Dr Erin Bulluss and Ms Rachel Samson

There is increasing evidence that individuals on the autism spectrum can present with a range of complex comorbidities in adulthood, however there is currently little empirical evidence regarding appropriate treatment protocols for addressing these psychiatric comorbidities. The application of Schema Therapy with adults with autism is an emerging field of research with clinical trials underway in Europe and Asia. Schema Therapy provides a transdiagnostic framework for flexible, individualised therapeutic intervention that incorporates features of ASD, developmental history, and comorbid symptomology into one comprehensive case conceptualisation.

This seminar is aimed at professionals in the mental health and/or disability sectors working with adults on the autism spectrum. This seminar will offer an introduction to Schema Therapy with adults with high-functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder and complex comorbidities. A basic knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Schema Therapy will be helpful.

Learning outcomes

During this seminar, participants will learn to:

1. Recognise ASD features as distinct from schemas and coping modes

2. Incorporate ASD specific needs into Schema Therapy conceptualisation and treatment

3. Consider when therapeutic impasses may be ASD hidden in plain sight
