| Description | The workshop will provide a detailed overview of the range of interventions available for individuals with autism spectrum disorder. The focus will be on evidence-based interventions aimed at addressing the core deficits and characteristics of ASD i.e. strategies aimed at improving social interaction and communication and reducing and/managing challenging or problematic behaviours. The most widely used autism specific early intervention programmes will be discussed e.g. ABA, Floortime, TEACCH, RDI. The evidence base for these programmes will also be presented. Strategies for increasing social participation including social stories, social coaching, group social skills programmes, playground and friendship programmes will also be discussed along with strategies to improve communication e.g. visuals, PECS. An introduction to positive behaviour support approaches will be outlined with particular reference to the school setting. Classroom strategies and curriculum modification will also be covered. |
