Treating Depression: Beyond CBT
|Presenters||Dr William Saunders|
|Description||Although not the most common of the psychological disorders, depression is the disorder that causes Australians the most distress. Traditionally, depression has been managed by an amalgam of antidepressants and cognitive behavioural therapies. However, it has become increasingly recognised that antidepressants and CBT often only go so far.
There is a valid contention that depression is best understood as an emotional, rather than a cognitive, state. Thus, emotion focussed interventions can add significantly to the therapeutic armoury of practitioners working with people with depression.
In this advanced interactive workshop Dr Bill Saunders will explore the nature of depression and its 'diagnosis', and introduce a range of emotion focussed techniques that can be usefully incorporated into any therapist's therapeutic armoury. These techniques are currently used in the individual and group psychotherapy programs operating at the Abbotsford Private Hospital in Perth, and are guaranteed to provide participants' with additional therapeutic skills for the more successful treatment of depression.
