Description

The Queensland College of Organisational Psychologists proudly presents our first Professional Development event of 2010. During the evening, our speakers will apply emergent I/O psychology research and contemporary thinking to management practice and organisational development in the area of leadership development.

Leadership Panel: How to Develop Excellent Leaders

This event will consist of a panel of leadership experts sharing their varied and significant experiences and ideas about the effectiveness of a number of different leadership development practices. Professor Peter Jordon will discuss emotions and leadership development while Dr Cheryl Kerr and her associate Cathryn Lloyd will discuss creativity in leadership development. Attendees of the event will have the opportunity to ask pertinent questions of our experts and further their knowledge of the available resources and strategies to encourage their clients to board the leadership vehicle to success.

Benefits of attending this event:

• Gain a better understanding of how emergent I/O research and contemporary ideas can be harnessed to guide leadership practice and improve organisational and individual employee performance
• Gain an understanding on the importance for leaders to develop emotional competencies and ways in which this can be achieved
• Gain a greater understanding of artful and creative based learning processes in the development of leaders

Who should attend?

Organisational psychologists, HR professionals and Coaches, and anyone working in the following areas: workforce planning, organisational development, change management, career development, succession planning, talent management, recruitment, HR policies, engagement and retention, etc.

Our presenters’ sessions will cover the following:

Peter Jordan - Developing Emotional Intelligence in Leaders

Leadership is an emotional business. During his presentation, Peter will identify the emotional foundations of leadership. In particular he will explore why it is important for leaders to develop emotional competencies and ways in which this can be achieved.

Cathryn Lloyd & Cheryl Kerr - Using the Arts and Creativity in the Development of Leadership

Adler, professor of organisational development, at Mcgill University, states that “... the very essence of 21st – century leadership increasingly demands the passionate creativity of artists ... ” (Adler, 2006, pp. 493-494). Kerr and Lloyd, in both practice and research, have found that creative capabilities linked with arts-based learning processes are important, if not essential, to development of those practicing various forms of management and leadership roles and activities within organisational environments. To stimulate participants’ critical thinking during the evening, Cathryn and Cheryl will end our presentation by asking: what does the artistry of leadership look like to you in the context of the discussions presented by the panel? To explore your ideas in an embodied way they will use an experiential learning process – body sculpture - to explore the professional artistry of your leadership in a collaborative context.
