The Early Career Research Award recognises excellence in scientific achievement in psychology among psychologists who are at early stages of their research careers. The Early Career Research Award is intended for candidates whose achievements are outstanding, and place them significantly ahead of their peers.

Eligibility

The Early Career Research Award may only be conferred upon nominees who have, within sixty (60) months of the date for close of nominations, received written advice from his/her tertiary institution confirming eligibility for conferral of his/her PhD in psychology.

Nomination process

(a) A call for nominations for the Early Career Research Award should:

(i) be advertised in InPsych

(ii) be provided to the Heads of Department of each tertiary institution that has independent membership of the Australian Vice-Chancellors’ Committee. 

(b) Candidates may be self-nominated or nominated another person. 

(c) Nominations should be addressed to the Board and received by the National Office prior to the closing date via registered post.  

(d) One complete hard copy nomination should be submitted with an electronic copy on CD ROM. Electronic documents should be submitted in PDF format. 

(e) Nominations should be made in writing on the Society’s nomination form (if applicable) and must include:

(i) the nominee’s curriculum vitae

(ii) a copy of the written advice from the nominee’s tertiary institution confirming eligibility for conferral of his/her PhD in psychology

(iii) details of all publications, prizes, grants and scholarships the nominee has previously been awarded

(iv) copies of five (5) selected publications, at least one of which should be concerned with research completed after the completion of the nominee’s PhD.

Administration of the Award

(i) Following the close of the call for nominations, a selection committee appointed by the Board will be responsible for selecting the successful candidates for recommendation to the Board.

(ii) Each year up to three Early Career Research Awards will be conferred.

Judging criteria

Each nominee will be judged on their publications, grants received, scientific creativity, originality and quality of research, and recognition by outside bodies.

Value of award

Successful candidates for an Early Career Research Award: 

(a) will be invited to attend the Society’s annual conference in the year following the receipt of their Early Career Research Award to present a paper on their work. If the recipient attends they will have their travel, conference registration expenses and accommodation for up to four (4) nights at the conference venue paid by the Society. 

(b) who attend the Society’s annual conference and present a paper will also receive a plaque of the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award, to be presented at the invited address.
