This Grant is intended to encourage and support innovative projects that have an intercultural and/or international focus. Such projects may aim either to further the intercultural agenda of the Society within the confines of Australia’s national boundaries, or to establish and maintain links between the Society and its members on the one hand and psychology and psychologists in countries where psychology is an emerging discipline on the other. Projects may be related to any scientific and/or professional aspects of the discipline, provided that they are consistent with the Society’s mission statement. The Grant is to be used to support the establishment and implementation of a successful project. 

Eligible projects may include, but are not restricted to, those that:

  1. Address scientific and/or professional issues that have intercultural significance for the Australian community, or involve intercultural collaborations amongst Australian psychologists;

  2. Provide further education and training opportunities for psychologists from emergent psychologies; or

  3. Foster collaborations between the Society and psychologists overseas that are seeking support to establish and build scientific and professional psychology within their own country or region.

The grant may be used to support any aspect of a successful project, including maintenance, travel, living allowance, training fees and charges, books and equipment, or other costs associated with the project, provided that the funds are expended in accordance with the budget that is submitted by the applicant at the time of application.

The Australian Psychological Society Grant for Intercultural and/or International Projects is the responsibility of the Manager, Public Interest.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a grant, the grantee shall be:

  1. A Full Member of the Society; or

  2. A psychologist from a developing country, who has been nominated by a Full Member of the Society.

The Grant Application

In order to be considered, the grant application shall include:

  1. A statement of rationale, including the project’s aims and objectives and how these reflect the Society’s mission statement;

  2. A proposed budget that includes a breakdown of how the funds will be used if the grant application is successful; 

  3. For projects that involve the nomination by an APS Full Member of another psychologist, the application shall include supporting documentation that addresses:

    (a) the suitability of the applicant and/or nominee to be the recipient of the grant,
    (b) the intercultural and/or international importance of the project, and
    (c) the relevance of the project for the Society.

  4. Applications should be no longer that five A4 pages, plus supporting documentation.

Administration of the Grant

  1. The Manager, Public Interest shall have responsibility annually for issuing the invitations and receiving the nominations for the Grant. Nominations shall be called for each year by a notice in InPsych, The Bulletin of the Australian Psychological Society.

  2. Nominees should submit four copies of all documentation to the Manager, Public Interest by the due date for applications.

  3. The Manager, Public Interest, after consultation with the Chairs of the Public Interest Advisory Group, shall appoint a selection panel to consider applications. One of these two Chairs, or their nominee shall chair the Panel, and shall bring a recommendation for the award of the Grant to the Board of Directors. 

  4. The selection panel may obtain additional information in the form of external assessors’ or referees’ reports, letters of support from participating psychologists’ associations or groups, or other independent advice to assist it in choosing the recipient of the grant. 

  5. The Manager, Public Interest in any year may recommend to the Board of Directors that the grant should not be awarded, if the selection panel has formed the opinion that there is no grant application that meets the eligibility criteria and is worthy of the grant.The successful grantee shall accept the grant in writing. A condition of acceptance shall be that the grantee shall provide the Manager, Public Interest at the completion of the project with a report that is suitable for dissemination to the membership through In-Psych, the Bulletin of the Australian Psychological Society. The report should encompass any future engagement or ongoing relationship with the APS that is anticipated in the aftermath of the grant.

  6. The Manager, Public Interest subsequently shall announce the successful grantee. That information, along with a short feature on the successful project, shall be published in In-Psych, the Bulletin of the Australian Psychological Society.

Value

The value of the Grant is $10,000, which can be divided into smaller Grants for two or three separate projects. The Grant is to be used to support the establishment and implementation of a successful project.
