About the tour

The APS invites you to join a sixteen-day study tour to Israel with Amanda Gordon, Hon FAPS.  The tour has been designed to orientate participants to that part of the world, to view Israel through the lens of history, and to gain greater appreciation of the geopolitics of the region.  There will be lectures from sociologists and psychiatrists, as well as psychology workshops, exploring the issues fundamental to Israeli society today.  In particular, there will be a workshop on interfaith dialogue, meetings with Christians, Muslims and Jews who work together to promote peace, and opportunities to discuss life in modern Israel with a range of colleagues. There will also be specialist workshops with experts on responses to trauma, and dealing with grief included in the programme.

The study tour begins with a visit to Genesis Land, in the middle of the Judean desert, where we meet with Abraham and eat the foods mentioned in the Bible.  Over the sixteen days, we progress through the Land of the Judges, the First and Second Temple periods, walk in the steps of Jesus, visit archaeological sites from the times of the Romans, the Crusaders, the Ottomans, see mystical sixteenth century Sfad, where the Kabbalah originated – as well as modern cities including Tel Aviv, Beersheva, Haifa and Jerusalem.

This tour will provide opportunities for peer consultation provided by Amanda Gordon (a member of both the Clinical and Health Colleges), active learning (workshops and engagement with colleagues) and other CPD through presentations by Israeli colleagues from a number of first-rate psychology departments. Particular themes include cross-cultural issues, spirituality, trauma and resilience and the therapeutic approaches required for children, adolescents and adults.

This tour includes half-day workshops, to meet individual Professional Development needs.  Proposed Workshops Topics include:

  • Community Resilience in Response to Trauma
  • Working with Children and Families living in Traumatic Circumstances
  • Cross-cultural Issues in Responses to Trauma and Resilience
  • Promoting Self-Efficacy for Victims of Trauma
  • Psychological Interventions for Victims of Trauma – first response and PTSD
  • The Two-track Model of Grief and Bereavement

Other PD opportunities include a visit and presentations at the Feuerstein Institute, world renowned for its ground-breaking work with severely disabled children; presentations from the Department of Public Health at Hadassah Hospital, where we will learn of the international work to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS, as well as other projects in which the Department is involved.

In addition, Israel and Australia share the distinction of having significant cultural mixes within their populations, so those seeking to develop psychological skills/techniques to assist in their work with clients from other cultures should consider joining this tour.

If your individual learning plan as outlined in the CPD requirements from the Psychology Board of Australia includes learning activities that address trauma counseling as applied to children, adolescents and adults, increased understanding of grief and bereavement, child and family therapy, medical/health psychology and/or cross-cultural psychology, educational and developmental psychology – you may wish to consider joining this study tour to Israel.

What people have said about the previous Israel Study Tour?

  • Group size and composition seemed perfect – a particularly happy mix of individuals.
  • This study- trip impressed me for the openness, honesty and trust with which the relevant issues were revealed and explored by any person involved. In the overall it was a powerful learning experience for me - which I will be happy to encourage any psychologist who has an interest in grief, trauma and human resilience to join in, with high expectations.
  • To me, every scheduled activity is worth repeating. The most valuable learning came from the cumulative learning to which each activity played an important part. The immersion into the historical, political, social and spiritual fibre of Israel provided by the study-trip  – through a perfect synthesis of touristic and academic activities -  was  crucial to appreciate the context of the Jewish’ traumatic grief and also resilience experiences.
  • The members of the group were memorable individuals and everyone got on well.
  • Congratulations for designing an outstanding, challenging, stimulating study tour. Thank you very much.
  • Wonderful schedule and fitted an unbelievable number of activities into 9 days.
  • I loved this tour – all our tour guides were outstanding.
  • It exceeded my expectations.  I think that all members of APS would greatly benefit from the experience.
  • Overall, an excellent experience, well conducted and planned
  • Quality of the PD input was very good
