Honorary Fellows

The grade of Honorary Fellow is the highest available grade of membership within the APS. This grade is bestowed upon a person who has made both an extraordinary contribution to the advancement of the Society and a distinguished contribution to the advancement of psychological knowledge or practice, and was previously elected as a Fellow of the Society. The total number of Honorary Fellows, at any one time, will not exceed 15.

Life Members

In 2005, the APS first awarded the status of Life Member to those members who had held at least 50 years continuous membership with the APS, which incorporated at least 10 years as a member of the Australian Branch of the British Psychological Society.

Fellows

The grade of Fellow requires an applicant:

  • to be a Member of the Society,
  • to have been engaged in psychological work or study for a period of not less than ten (10) years subsequent to becoming a Member of the Society or in exceptional circumstances subsequent to attaining the qualifications necessary to become a Member of the Society
  • to possess an advanced knowledge of psychology in at least one (1) of its fields; and
  • in the opinion of the Board, to have made:
    • a substantial contribution to the activities of the Society extending over not less than five (5) years in total; and
    • a substantial and innovative contribution to the advancement of psychological knowledge; and/or
    • a substantial and innovative contribution to professional psychological practice, whether through his or her own work or by organising and developing the work of others.

Consideration of Fellow applications occurs on an annual basis. Applications must be lodged by 30 April of each year.
