The Australian government has nominated the Australian Psychological Society (APS) as the assessing body for psychologists applying for migration to Australia under the General Skilled Migration categories.

This means the APS is the only body in Australia that can assess psychology qualifications for migration to Australia under these categories.

Requirements for a positive skills assessment

People seeking to migrate under the General Skilled Migration categories must have:

  • Completed qualifications comparable to six years of study in psychology in Australia; and meet the English language proficiency requirements

OR

  • Hold unconditional general registration as a psychologist in Australia at the time of applying for an assessment

English language proficiency requirements

From 1 July 2015, the English language proficiency requirements for an assessment for the purpose of migration are aligned with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency registration standards for English language proficiency.

To meet the English language proficiency requirements you must achieve the required minimum scores in one of the following English language tests - IELTS Academic, PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT. Test results must have been obtained within the past two years from the date your APS Assessment application is lodged.

See FAQs on English Language proficiency for minimum scores and more information.

  • Your assessment for skilled migration will not be accepted by the Psychology Board of Australia for the purpose of registration.
  • Your assessment for registration purposes will not be accepted by the APS for migration purposes.
  • An assessment for registration purposes does not guarantee that you will receive a positive skill assessment. Similarly, a positive skill assessment will not guarantee that you will receive registration.

Skilled employment history

The APS may also conduct a separate Assessment of Skilled Employment History.

How long does an assessment take?

Assessing qualifications is a complex process. The approximate processing time is eight weeks. The processing time may exceed eight weeks depending on the complexity of an individual's application and whether all the necessary documents have been provided.
