APS practice certificate in sleep psychology

The APS practice certificate in sleep psychology has been developed by the APS Institute in close collaboration with the Australasian Sleep Association (ASA). The content has been selected and assembled to enable psychologists and other sleep practitioners to gain knowledge of, and insight into, healthy and disordered sleep, including the assessment and management of the common sleep disorders. The APS practice certificate program consists of four component courses as follows:

  • Part 1: Introduction to sleep psychology
  • Part 2: Insomnia
  • Part 3: Circadian rhythm sleep disorder
  • Part 4: Obstructive sleep apnoea and CPAP adherence

Courses can be selected and taken individually although the APS Institute strongly recommends Part 1: Introduction to sleep psychology as basic preparation for the three remaining courses that make up the program. Persons who successfully complete a course will receive a certificate of completion for the course they have completed. Persons who successfully complete all four courses above will receive the APS practice certificate in sleep psychology to acknowledge their completion of this extended program of training.

Part 2: Insomnia

Insomnia is the most common of the sleep disorders. This course has been designed to give practitioners greater appreciation of the debilitating effects of this chronic sleep-wake disorder as well as skills for assessing and treating insomnia. The course includes information on: the etiology, definition and diagnosis insomnia disorder; the bi-directional nature of insomnia’s relationship to depression, anxiety and other commonly associated comorbid conditions; common myths and beliefs surrounding insomnia; assessment, case formulation, and treatments, including CBT for insomnia (CBT-i) and mindfulness; sleep ‘hygiene’; common sleep medications and side-effects; next steps for ongoing care in the treatment of complex cases; and case studies that illustrate a number of assessment and treatment options. Issuance of the certificate of completion depends on the successful completion of a short online assessment task.

Duration of enrolment

The course duration is 6 months from the date of your course registration.
