The self in the formulation and treatment of psychological disorders

Event number: 19026
6.5 CPD hours
APS Institute CPD
Presenter(s): Prof Mike Kyrios

Level of Learning: Intermediate

While some psychotherapy approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and the narrative therapies have explicit frameworks for dealing with self processes, mental health services and practitioners have become all too focused on treating “disorders”. CBT highlights the influence of specific beliefs and appraisals of situations in generating symptoms but tends to overlook ways of directly affecting change in self structures. This workshop will explore these issues and will workshop difficult cases with a focus on OCD to demonstrate these self-based management/treatment strategies.
