The aim of this Suicide Prevention Professional Development Training is to equip allied health clinicians with foundational knowledge and skills which will assist them to work engage with people and populations at risk of suicide and serious self-harm. The course consists of four modules that address: understanding suicide and suicidal behaviour; risk assessment and crisis intervention; working with populations at risk of suicide or serious self-harm; and referrals and self-care for allied health workers. Each module includes a printable learning guide, online video presentations, interactive activities, readings, and other relevant resources to enable demonstration of active professional development.

Upon completing this training course, allied health clinicians will be eligible to work under the ATAPS Suicide Prevention Service.. Under the ATAPS framework, allied health workers can include psychologists, social workers, mental health nurses, occupational therapists and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers. The Australian Psychological Society developed initial training and the course with funding from the then Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
