Psychology is a regulated profession in Australia. This means that people who call themselves a psychologist or say they are practising as a psychologist must be registered with the Psychology Board of Australia and must adhere to standards and a strict code of ethics to keep their registration.

To practise as a psychologist in Australia you must hold current registration. The Psychology Board of Australia determines the requirements for registration. As of 1 June 2016, the Psychology Board of Australia conducts assessments of overseas psychology qualifications for applicants seeking registration as a psychologist in Australia.  If you are seeking provisional or general registration to practise as a psychologist in Australia you must apply directly to the Psychology Board of Australia. Your employer may request you undergo an APS assessment of psychology qualifications for employment purposes. It is important to note this assessment may not be used for registration.

Your employer may request that you have an APS assessment conducted as many psychology graduates work in higher education or fields related to psychology (such as research) where registration as a psychologist may not be required.
